About this Blog

The Women and Media Collective in partnership with the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Empowerment as well as six other national and local level women’s groups ( International Center for Ethnic Studies, Sarvodaya Women's Movement, Uva Wellassa Farner Women's Organisation, Viluthu, Women's Development Center and Women's Resource Center) seeks to increase the percentage of nominations and votes for women in the upcoming Local Government elections, which is expected to be held in early 2011. The aim is to increase nominations and votes for women to at least 25% in local government electorates in the country.

In Sri Lanka, women constitute less than 6% in Parliament, 5% of Provincial Councils and 2% in Local Government. These statistics are the lowest in South Asia and Sri Lanka is the only country in the region without a quota for women in Local Government.

This blog features female candidates who wish to contest for the Local Government elections which is expected to be held in early 2011. The women are from five districts in Sri Lanka- Galle, Monaragala, Kurunegala, Badulla and Tricomalee. It also includes news, television and radio programmes as well as other information related to the Local Government elections in Sri Lanka.

This blog is maintained by Women and Media Collective aiming to bring about change based on feminist principles for a society free from violence and militarization, which would pave the way for a balanced representation of women in decision-making and governance, and advocate for non-discriminatory laws and policies.
